Images of Rural Japan 2005 - 2007

Beginning in September of 2005 I relocated to Japan and started a series of paintings and photographs based on scenes in Japan. I have always found traditional Japanese architecture calming. The feeling I get when surrounded by Japanese markets, temples, shrines, and castles is captivating and calming.

In my paintings and Pen & Ink drawings, my goal is to transmit that feeling of timelessness, tranquility and simplicity. In a world filled with demanding schedules, and increasingly complex systems, a momentary gander at a calm and soothing image, where time stands still, can bring our spirit back to that place where we find our center, leaving us grounded in the midst of chaos. This is zen - the ability to be the calm in the middle of the storm.
